Toyota has long been recognized as a leader in the automotive manufacturing and production industry. Toyota invented "lean production" according to Jeffrey Liker, author of The Toyota Way. It's also known as the Toyota Production System or TPS for short. And it seems to work well: Toyota's profits in March 2003 were larger than GM, Ford, and Chrysler combined! Six Sigma and Lean are clearly on a collision course. The term "lean" was coined to describe Toyota's business during the late 1980s by a research team headed by Jim Womack, Ph.D., at MIT's International Motor Vehicle Program. The push towards lean manufacturing originates from the Toyota Production System which is often referred to as Just In Time (JIT) Production.

The Toyota Production system is a major precursor of Lean Manufacturing. Founded on the conceptual pillars of 'Just-in-time' and 'Jidoka' (or, Automation with a Human Touch), the system was first built off the approach created by the founder of Toyota, Sakichi Toyoda and his son, Kiichiro Toyoda . What is Lean? Lean is the same as Lean manufacturing or Lean production. Indeed, it is a method elaborated based on the Toyota Production System back in the 30s, renamed today the Toyota way. Sometimes, it is known as LSS, Lean-Six Sigma when Lean is bundled with the 6 Sigma (6σ) approach.
